COMMENTARY -
"Incredible Victory"
In the last newsletter prior to the November 2
election, Carla Young challenged the Republicans throughout the county to
participate in the 72-hour Task Force. On the days before the general election,
several polls showed President George W. Bush trailing his opponent by a few
percentage points. Most observers predicted that the presidential election
would be decided by a few electoral votes. Instead of being close, the
President won the nations popular vote by a substantial margin and won Missouri by almost 200,000 votes.
Additionally, few people predicted a substantial margin of victory that
Governor Matt Blunt obtained. All of our local candidates campaigned hard in
the weeks leading up to the election, as if they were trailing.
In
the State Senate, the Republicans now hold 23 of 34 seats and in the Missouri
House, Republicans made a gain of seven seats, now with a 97 to 66 vote
majority. This is the largest percentage in Missouri history for Republicans.
West central Missouri picked up two seats for
Republican Senators in the election of Bill Stouffer in the 21st District and
Chris Koster in the 31st District.
More
than 120 volunteers in PettisCounty worked over 1,000 hours
in the last five days of the campaign. Everyones hard work paid great
dividends. Presidents Bushs margin of victory in Pettis County was more than
2,000 votes above his Election 2000 race with more than 66% of the votes cast
for President. The Republican Party won three out of four of the hard fought
local races, in electing Kevin Bond as Sheriff, Matt Mergen
as Assessor, and Robert Skip Smith as Coroner. Their respective percentages
were 53%, 54% and 58%. Dean Dohrman polled over 46% in
his race for Public Administrator against an incumbent. All of the Republican
state-wide candidates polled substantially better in PettisCounty than state-wide, with Kit
Bond receiving over 67%, Matt Blunt receiving over 57%, Peter Kinder receiving
56% and Catherine Hanaway, who was unsuccessful,
receiving almost 54%. Sarah Steelman received almost
58% in PettisCounty in her successful bid for
State Treasurer. Literally hundreds of local volunteers made a real difference
in all that they did.
We have much to celebrate and are proud to be
represented by such fine individuals at our local level. These victories and
our hard fought campaigns will be celebrated at our local McKinley Day
Celebration on March 24th. I encourage all of you to come out and celebrate our
"incredible victory".
