COMMENTARY - "LET'S MAKE SURE MISSOURI GETS IT"
by Dean Dohrman
During my rather lengthy college career, I studied world history extensively before
switching to international relations and its subfield of international
political economy. Using Pettis
County as a case study, I
spent years studying the intertwined economic system of our globe. What I
discovered is that what comes around goes around: we supported other countries
devastated by World War II, and when we faced financial difficulties during the
1970s, foreign investors were, in turn, willing to place their bets with us. As
a result, some very important manufacturers in our county were saved and remain
to this day. My point is, we are a part of the international community
(economic and otherwise), and we would be foolish to ignore this fact.
International events affect our daily lives. In other words, along the way, I
got it. However, from what I hear on the other side of the aisle, they don't
get it.
We have some prolific essayists in our county who continually criticize our
president. Perhaps he deserves some of this criticism, but it should be in a
rational, reasoned manner, not just bitter dissatisfaction.
I can't change their minds, nor will I try; however, I can attempt to offer a
clearer picture of the current conflict and what it means to us. First I will
discredit some myths floating in the media and then explain what we in Pettis County
can do to ensure our future security and way of life.
First, there are groups, fanatical groups, opposed to the existence of Israel and its
supporters, i.e., you and me. This comes from the time of the inception of the
state of Israel.
Shortly after World War II when Palestinian Jews declared themselves the state
of Israel,
President Harry Truman recognized the new entity. This gave Israel a boost
of legitimacy in the international community. Fanatical Muslims believe Israel is an
invasion of infidels into their land, and through Truman's action, we supported
this abomination.
This brings us to our second point, it's not about Iraq! it's about containing a
cultural war. The talk of politics I hear on the national talk shows is
misguided. Our enemy does not want to negotiate: they want the infidels (us)
dead. The liberals accuse people like me of being married to a model, but what
are they? They believe that everyone is committed to the survival of their
particular nation-state, but this is not the case. Radical Islam doesn't
believe in the nation-state, they believe in a universal theocracy. In their New World Order, the religious clerics would decide
right, wrong, and all policy, the rest of us can follow along or suffer
persecution.
I highly recommend that you read (or re-read) Samuel Huntington's book, The
Clash of Civilizations. Huntington
got it back in the early 1990s. He warned what would come to pass, but the
liberals, convinced the world is full of rational atheists, can't comprehend the
extent of the struggle. Religion is one of the most defining elements of
culture: those who oppose our way of life will fight and die to pursue their
vision of the world. They follow no rules of war; they use every means, no
matter how barbaric, to pursue their goal of eliminating the infidel (remember,
that is us). In their minds, they are right and we are evil. The evil must be
eliminated.
Third, the liberals would have you believe that Iraq is in a civil war, if we would
leave them alone, things would improve. Nothing could be further from the
truth. We have something to very near and dear to lose: security and our way of
life.
How often do you fear being killed by a suicide bomber? It happened here on
September 11, 2001. Think it can't happen again? Think again. The recent
developments in Britain
prove that the threat is anything but gone. If we sleep, if we cotton to those
who don't understand the difference of rights during peace time and rights
during time of war, if we believe that the problem is only a problem of the Middle East, we will learn differently. Unfortunately,
this lesson will be written in blood. And what if Iran gets the bomb?!? No one on the
planet will be immune from attack. This is not scare talk: it is a real
possibility.
I did a short interview with National Public Radio during the Fair. Most of the
opinions in this essay, I related to them. I don't think the reporter really
understood when I said, "I'd rather fight them over there than fight them
over here." I trust you will and will vote and give your support
accordingly.
What can we do here in Pettis
County? We can actively
back our incumbent Senator Jim Talent. He understands the threat we face today
and provides the type of leadership we need to preserve our security and way of
life. He will face competition in certain areas of Missouri, but we can help to counter this
attempt to bury heads in the sand and hope everything goes well. It won't, the
enemy will make certain of that. This is not just another election: it is an
election that will determine the future of our national security, or insecurity
if we get it wrong. Let's stay together and make certain that Missouri gets it right: it's our future,
it's our kids future.
