Commentary - Challenges Ahead
In the last newsletter prior to
the November 7, 2006, election, County Chairman Carla Young encouraged
Republicans throughout the County to participate in the 72-hour Task Force. In
the days prior to the general election, everyone realized that the state-wide
race between Senator James Talent and his Democratic opponent would be very
close. More than 70 volunteers worked over 500 hours in the last five days of
the campaign in connection with the 72-hour Task Force. Everyones hard work
paid off with great dividends locally, even in a time when the national results
were seriously disappointing. Although Senator Talent lost state-wide, he
garnered approximately 55% of the Pettis
County vote when compared
to his Democratic opponent only. Through the efforts of the candidates and
other volunteers, Pettis County was able to win four out of six of the hard
fought Pettis County races, and were able to retain the 118th
District State Representative District in the Republican column. Although
somewhat diminished in each house of the general assembly, the Republicans
continue to control the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri
Senate. The challenges for 2008 are apparent. Undoubtedly, state-wide the
Democrats will run aggressively against Governor Matt Blunt and the other
state-wide Republican officials. It will be a serious challenge to hold on to
both the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri Senate in 2008. We
should all be proud of how we did here locally, but we cannot rest on our
laurels. We need to organize and work hard if we are to be successful next
year.
In addition to the McKinley Day Celebration to be held
March 1, 2007, another important activity that needs your participation is the
planning meeting scheduled for April 26, 2007. Please see the information about
these events on the preceding page.
Locally, Susan Sadler led the Republican ticket with
over 65% against her Democratic opponent, to be elected as Pettis County
Circuit Clerk. Pettis Presiding Commissioner Rusty Kahrs and Associate Circuit
Judge R. Paul Beard both polled over 56% against their Democratic opponents in
hard fought campaigns. Dean Dohrman won by over 100 votes against a very strong
Democratic opponent to be elected as Pettis County Assessor. In Pettis County,
both Senator Delbert Scott (60.37%) and Stanley Cox (61.39%) won substantially.
Although the County
Clerk candidate Vincent
Phang and Collector candidate Ron Yates were unsuccessful, they both
demonstrated their character and their willingness to go against long odds in
connection with these two campaigns. The hundreds of local volunteers made a
real difference. We have much to celebrate and are proud to be represented by
such fine individuals at our local and state level. We must keep our eye on the
challenges ahead and must continue to work for good government here at the
local and state level.
